The Police are responsible for keeping the public safe and to maintain law and order. In order to carry out these duties, they are authorized to enforce the law in certain situations. But the power is not unlimited and, if used excessively, the power violates our God-given and constitutionally protected rights.

We, the NYC For-Hire Drivers, believe that the TLC Police is not an exception. Indeed, over the years, the TLC Police has repeatedly abused its power. There are countless examples of illegal behavior and violations by the TLC Police such as making daily unlawful traffic stops and arrests of For-Hire Drivers, issuing duplicate summons for the same violation issued by other agencies such as NYPD and speed cameras, giving For-Hire Drivers traffic tickets based on false allegation by random complaints by pedestrians or cyclists without questioning or verifying the identity of any of those claimants, and issuing a harsh tickets to drivers merely for expressing their frustration over the phone or email or even on social media of TLC-Police unaccepted behavior, these are just to name few. 

Action must be taken to put an end to the lack of accountability carried by the TLC Police. We demand to DISBAND the TLC Police and re-assign its responsibilities to NYPD. The very duties of the TLC police redundantly interfere and replicate those of the NYPD's road safety divisions. We further demand removing the shield of immunity to force the TLC Police officers to reconsider their actions before acting impulsively. This would encourage all those acting under the color of law enforcement to uphold their oath of office, thus protecting civil rights of all For-Hire Drivers and to prevent: racketeering, false arrest, excessive force, misconduct, and all other types of abuse of power that occur at the hands of the TLC Police . This is an effort to help hardworking For-Hire Drivers to seek justice and accountability for damages to their livelihood caused by the TLC Police. The TLC Police members have the same power to enforce traffic laws as the NYPD, but their members are not subject to the same training an NYPD traffic patrol office usually receives. As a result, we have seen the TLC Police time and time again violate the civil rights of For-Hire Drivers without any responsibility or being held accountable for their actions. 

We further believe that disbanding the TLC Police and redirecting the resources to help For-Hire Drivers overcome the devastating hardship imposed on them by the Covid 19 Pandemic will have a long lasting effect in protecting and empowering our community.
