Why this petition matters

Started by Ella Keal

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are proposing the closure of Porlock Fire Station, which is going to public consultation from 1st July to 20th September, so make your voices heard.

If you have already signed a paper petition locally there is no need to sign the online petition as well - but please continue to send emails and letters to the Fire Authority and our local MP.

Porlock Fire Station was the acknowledged to be the top Fire Station in D&S FA last year.  This highly experienced crew with over 85% availability is serving the most vulnerable population in Somerset.
Living in traditional houses, frequently isolated from the main roads and easy access, fires are a serious hazard to the elderly and less mobile. A quick response is needed to save lives.
Increased numbers of moorland fires are expected as the climate warms up. Speedy responses are needed to prevent the catastrophic destruction of this important environmental resource. This highly trained crew have specialise moor fire fighting equipment to prevent another Saddleworth Moor disaster.
Exmoor draws increasing numbers of tourists each year. Sadly this results in increasing road traffic accidents that need rapid assistance from the fireman. The Porlock crew provides this service.
The community contributes the same taxes as urban areas towards the D&S FA. It is unreasonable to expect rural areas to receive a reduced service in comparison to others in this day and age.
