The Background

Associated Pan Malaysia Cement Sdn Bhd (APMC) , a subsidiary of YTL, plans to expand their quarrying operations to near the Sakyamuni Caves Monastery that is located in the remaining portion of Gunung Kanthan. The cement giant is attempting to evict monks and devotees from their century-old caves monastery by obtaining a court order. For decades, the caves monastery has been the CUSTODIAN of Gunung Kanthan.

We urge His Royal Highness, the Sultan of Perak, YAB Menteri Besar of Perak and the Perak State Government to avert this threat by officially declaring Sakyamuni Caves Monastery a place of worship and Gunung Kanthan a national heritage site for the following reasons:-

1.     The Sakyamuni Caves Monastery has been in existence in Gunung Kanthan for more than a century. The caves monastery serves as a spiritual refuge for monks and thousands of devotees.

Furthermore, the Buddha statues embedded in the caves monastery are symbolic of Buddhism. It is a great Buddhist heritage and a great treasure for Buddhists worldwide.

2.      Only a small portion of the Gunung Kanthan mountain remains untouched; the rest of it has been quarried. This small portion is a repository for flora and fauna that are found nowhere else on Earth. This fact has been confirmed by FRIM (Forest Research Institute of Malaysia)

Additionally, other renowned researchers discovered new species of Kanthan snails and an endemic gecko in addition to the critically endangered Trapdoor Spider (Liphistius kanthan).

3.      The health issue of the surrounding multi-racial communities (Dovenby, Kg. Ramasamy, Kg. Kanthan, Kg Baru Kanthan Lama, etc) must be protected from air pollution and noise, not to mention the impact on river system and underground water.  Furthermore, there are two Hindu temples in Gunung Kanthan. 

Please kindly support the ‘Save Sakyamuni Caves Monastery, Save Gunung Kanthan’ petition to ensure the harmony of multi-religion cave temples and a healthy living environment for multi-racial communities around Gunung Kanthan. Gunung Kanthan, without a doubt, is an irreplaceable God-given heritage that must be preserved as a legacy.  We would like to also get 1 million supporting signatories for this petition
