Pass/Fail option for UMBC students
Pass/Fail option for UMBC students
Why this petition matters
Due to Covid-19, classes have been forced online, and students and teachers alike have had to adjust and continue learning. In the midst of this chaos, we believe that the appropriate action from our university is to allow students to decide if their classes should be graded on a pass/fail scale or on the regular grading scale. The truth is that within this climate, students and teachers are trying their best to move forward but every class cannot be translatable to an online setting. In addition, many of the professors in our school, while being experts in their field, have very little to no experience with online courses and are creating policies on the fly. Moreover, stress, depression, illness, family deaths and financial burden due to the corona virus puts both our students and teachers in situations never seen before. These circumstances can and will impact the ability for students to achieve to their highest ability, which negatively impacts not just the degree we are pursuing, but also chances for further graduate studies. The benefits of implementing this administrative change severely outweigh any disadvantages. We hope that the University of Maryland Baltimore County enacts this change for the benefit of the entire student-faculty community and continue its legacy of providing the most conducing environment for learning possible.
