We urge the Japan Olympic Museum to revise information about Sohn Kee-chung and Nam Sung-yong!

In the Olympic Museum that opened on September 14th, 2019, colonial Joseon-born marathoner Olympic gold medalist Sohn Kee-chung  and bronze medalist Nam Sung-yong are simply represented by their Japanese name
and Japanese nationality even though 75 years have passed after the end of Japanese imperialism.

In the museum, we could not find any explanation that both Sohn and Nam were Koreans and that Korea was colonized by Japanese imperialism at the time of their participation.

The official IOC web site introduces that ① both athletes are Koreans, ② during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Korea was under Japanese colonial rule, ③ after Korea achieved independence, Sohn carried the torch during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

We urge the Japan Olympic Museum to revise information about both athletes.

This is not damaging Japan’s Olympic record and history.

It is a request to understand and sympathize the pain and disgrace experienced by the athletes who had lost their country,  and to find the true history of the athletes’ own country and name.

It is said that the Olympic Museum was built to let people get to know about the Olympic Spirit.

It explains that the Olympic Spirit is “to build a peaceful and better world in the Olympic Spirit which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play.”

We hope the Olympic Spirit that the Olympic Museum seeks to realize is not a hollow will.

Please do not forget that friendship, solidarity, and peace are feasible when there is understanding, empathy, and consideration for the surroundings. We ask the Olympic Museum and the Japanese Olympic Committee to truly practice the Olympic Spirit as a host country.

1. We ask you to properly indicate the two athletes’, Sohn Kee-chung and Nam Sung-yong’s Korean name and nationality.

2. We ask you to add information that even though the two athletes participated in the 1936 Berlin Olympics as Japanese because Korea was, at that time, occupied by Japan, the two athletes became national heroes in Korea.

일본 올림픽 박물관에 손기정, 남승룡 선수에 대한 정보를 정정해 줄 것을 요구합니다!

2019. 9. 14. 개관한 올림픽 박물관. 식민지 조선인 마라토너 금메달리스트 손기정, 동메달리스트 남승룡 선수는 일본 제국주의가 종식된 지 75년이 흘렀음에도 단순히 일본 이름과 일본 국적으로 표시되어 있습니다.

손기정, 남승룡 선수는 한국인이며, 출전 당시 한국은 일본 제국주의의 식민지배 상태였다는 설명은 어디에서도 찾아볼 수 없습니다.

국제올림픽 위원회(IOC)는 공식 홈페이지에서 ① 두 선수는 한국인이며 ② 1936년 베를린 올림픽 당시 한국은 일제 식민지 시기였고 ③ 광복 후 손기정 선수는 1988년 서울 올림픽 때 성화를 봉송하기도 하였다고 소개하고 있습니다.

우리는 일본 올림픽 박물관에 손기정, 남승룡 선수 정보 정정을 요구합니다.
이는 일본의 올림픽 기록과 역사를 훼손하는 일이 아닙니다.

나라 잃은 선수가 겪었던 아픔, 치욕을 이해, 공감하고 이제라도 선수 자신의 국가와 이름을, 진정한 역사를 찾아달라는 요청입니다.

올림픽 박물관은 올림픽 정신을 알리기 위해 설립되었다고 합니다. 올림픽 정신이란 스포츠를 통한 우정과 결속, 페어플레이 정신을 배움으로써
평화롭고 더 나은 세상을 만들자는 올림픽 철학이라고 설명합니다.

우리는 올림픽 박물관이 실현하고자 하는 올림픽 정신이 공허하지 않기를 바랍니다.

우정과 결속, 평화는 주변에 대한 이해, 공감, 배려가 있을 때 가능하다는 사실을 잊지 말아 주길 바랍니다.

올림픽 박물관과 일본 올림픽 위원회는 올림픽 주최국으로서 올림픽 정신을 제대로 실천해주기를 요청합니다.

1. 손기정, 남승룡 선수들의 한국어 이름과 한국 국적을 제대로 표시해줄 것을 요구합니다.

2. 베를린 올림픽 당시는 식민지 시기로 두 선수가 일본인으로 출전했으나 두 선수는 한국의 국가적 영웅이 되었다는 내용을 추가해 줄 것을 요구합니다.
