Reduce/Eliminate Miami-Dade County’s Purchase of Single-Use Plastics
Why this petition matters
OUR WORLD'S WILDLIFE IS SCREAMING FOR YOUR HELP! AND WE ARE THE ONLY VOICE IT HAS!
Dear Friends,
Single-use plastics are killing our planet's wildlife, choking our waterways, polluting our oceans and pristine beaches .... and harming our community's economy. We use them for 5 to 10 minutes, but they will last hundreds of years in our environment. Plastics do not biodegrade! Instead, they slowly break down into smaller pieces called microplastics and, consequently, absorb toxic chemicals and pollutants dissolved in the water. These may be eventually consumed by a variety of seafood species which we consume on a daily basis. Do I need to say anymore?
And this is why I am writing in support of Miami-Dade County Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava's resolution 192400 to reduce or eliminate the single-use plastics purchased by Miami-Dade County. Numerous studies detail the aesthetic, environmental, and health-related impacts of disposable plastics on tourism, and it is no question that plastic pollution in Miami’s waterways, beaches, and streets directly impacts local businesses.

In addition, as a coastal community, Miami’s businesses and consumers are amongst the first and most profoundly affected by plastic pollution. It is time Miami-Dade County lead the sustainable transition away from these clearly harmful disposables to the many low-cost alternatives to single-use plastics that are currently available and easily incorporated into businesses and residents' daily lives.
Commissioner Cava's proposed resolution has the potential to significantly reduce our County’s contribution to the overwhelming amount of debris in South Florida’s waterways and beaches. Miami-Dade County must lead the way! We must also educate and empower our residents and businesses alike on the environmental and health benefits of sustainable alternatives and on the emerging opportunities for more sustainable business practices through your leadership.
We simply cannot continue to rely on persistent materials for our single-use needs. I ask the Committee to not remain idle and, rather, utilize this opportunity to elevate the health, well-being, and productivity of Miami-Dade County.
Sincerely,
Luiz Rodrigues
