Why this petition matters

Started by Shanda OBryant

On the evening of June 16, 2006, a terrible tragedy occurred. Courtenay Jermaine O’Bryant Sr., was killed while in the hands of someone sworn to “Protect and Serve” all citizens, regardless of their ethnicity or background. Deputy Tim Watson initiated a routine traffic stop for a no seat belt offense that ended with Courtenay’s life being taken. Now tell us how does this make sense, to lose your life in a routine traffic stop for NO SEAT BELT? IT DOES NOT!! Regardless of Courtenay’s past, he was a loving son, brother, and most notably, a FATHER! And he didn’t deserve to be MURDERED by Officer Tim Watson.

Courtenay kept a smile on his face and would give the shirt off his back to anyone. Do not get us wrong, he wasn’t without fault, as we all have things in our past that we aren't proud of, but in time, life allows us to CHANGE our trajectory. Unfortunately, now his trajectory will never be complete, because his life was literally taken away, STOLEN as we all agree as family to believe. One word that comes to mind as we remember him is PASSIONATE! Family meant so much to him and to him family meant so much more than blood kin. To know him was to love him, which is why he never met a stranger.

The past 14 years since have not been easy by far. Some days feel as if this incident has just happened. Even after Huntsville Officials offered our mother $25,000.00 to try and make this case go away, was a blatant slap in the face. However, it was also telling that there is more to the case, than what mouths have said publicly.  People say that time heals all wounds, but ours just scab and then get ripped open again. Our faith and prayers have gotten us by thus far along with our faith that justice will prevail. “But let judgment run down as waters, and the righteousness as a mighty stream,“ Amos 5:24. God sits high and looks low and our prayers will be answered soon! “JUSTICE FOR C.O.”

Please sign this potential to force Texas Governor Abbott, District Attorney David Weeks of Huntsville, Texas, and to solicited the help of Sheila Jackson Lee to help get this case RE-OPENED!
