The children of English Martyrs' Primary School are petitioning for Birmingham City Council to provide Sparkhill, and its local schools, with more public waste and recycling bins.

We have worked hard to create a video to support our campaign and really hope that other schools, parents and the residents of Birmingham, share our concerns and get on board to help us to clean up our environment.

Sparkhill is a densely populated area which is home to most of the families of children who attend English Martyrs', but how can we expect such a large population of people to share inadequate waste disposal facilities? When you pass through the streets of Sparkhill, the first thing you notice is the amount of litter on the floor! This is undermining the beauty of Sparkhill and does not represent the communities that we have living here. Unfortunately, this is mostly down to insufficient waste bins to safely dispose rubbish. This shortage of disposal facilities means that the ones that are available, are becoming full too quickly. As well as this, in our day and age, we shouldn't be combining all of our litter into one bin. We should all have access to bins that enable us to recycle paper, plastic and general waste.

We are a UNICEF Right's Respecting School, and we are working hard to ensure we are making changes to protect our climate, so please help us to conserve our local area. We as children have a voice and we are using it to turn our concerns into action. It’s our future, after all.

So please, Birmingham City Council, provide the streets of Sparkhill with more waste bins, especially recycling bins. Having more bins available reduces the amount of litter that is chucked on the floor and therefore protects our local environment and as a result, protects our future.
