Help save a historic student library
Help save a historic student library
Why this petition matters
We are a historic library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and have recently had our library space taken away from us. We are home to the Science Fiction Society, the Game Hobbyist League, the UMass Anime Club, and our library is one of our university’s first student organizations and has been run on the free labor of the students who love it for over sixty years. We lend thousands of books, manga, and games many of which are rare or extremely old and are of great historic value. The library has been an important part of the university community and has served as an inclusive space for students from marginalized groups who have been talked over or dismissed by other student organizations. We have openly promoted LGBTQ+ acceptance decades before most universities considered it an issue worth fighting for and in the 1960s the library allowed female students to circumvent a sexist 8:00 pm curfew on freshmen women and stay in the library for as long as they liked. The library has many notable alumni, including Hugo Award-Winning authors Jane Yolen and Suzanne Palmer. We have been a welcoming community for decades but unfortunately the university refuses to see us as important enough to deserve a place to operate our library. The university has more than enough space to relocate our library. However, they refuse to provide us with this space and have forced us to shut down our library, denied us our ability to come together as a community and are threatening to make us throw out many of our historic books. We are a small group of dedicated students trying to save our library and need your help. Please sign this petition to help the university administration understand the importance of libraries and historic book preservation, not to mention the positive impact our organization has had on the community and hundreds of students. We greatly appreciate your help.
