Why this petition matters

Started by Hanifa Abbasi

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) people in Pakistan do not have equal rights and face social difficulties compared to non-LGBTQ persons. Even in large cities, people on the spectrum have to be highly discreet about their sexual orientation.

The Pakistan Penal Code of 1860, a British colonial era law, punishes sodomy with a possible prison sentence and has other provisions that impact the human rights of LGBTQ Pakistanis.

Article 377 under the Pakistani penal code states that: "Whoever voluntarily has  intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which shall not be less than two years and shall also be liable to fine."

Although it does not explicitly include the word homosexual, it has been used to prosecute homosexual activity and the country does not have any civil rights laws to prohibit discrimination or harassment on the basis of sexual orientation.

This law violates human rights granted to all citizens of the world according to the first document adopted by the United Nations Organization.

It is essential that we get the attention of the Pakistani Government so that we can implement real change, bring justice to LGBTQ community, and deliver them the rights that they deserve.
