Why this petition matters

Started by permjit singh

Leprosy is a tragic disease, causing damage to skin, nerves, limbs, and eyes, disfigurement, social stigmatisation and exclusion.

Some people who create definitions on urbandictionary.com have used leprosy or leprosy sufferers as synonyms for: laughter, derision, social exclusion, or to cause offence to another person.

Search for the word 'leper' on urbandictionary.com and you will see what I mean.

One definition of 'leper' includes the words: "it's ok to hurt lepers because they don;t feel pain. people with diseases aren't real people."  Also:

"that leper makes me sad, should we ask him to eat lunch with us?"
"...he's a leper for a reason."

In addition to signing the petition banning these offensive definitions, please email Aaron Peckham at legal@urbandictionary.com, or write to him (see text below) using the urbandictionary contact form here

 "Mr Peckham

Ban definitions on urbandictionary.com that use the word 'leper', or which mock leprosy and leprosy sufferers.  Leprosy is a tragic disease, not a symbol of social exclusion and ridicule."

With petitioners' support, people will realise that it is not OK for them to use Leprosy and Leprosy sufferers a symbol of social exclusion and ridicule.
