On 17th May 2018, Prime Minister; Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that he will be in charge of the Education Ministry stating that he would take over the education portfolio because many people are 'uneducated' and that he needed to give his attention to it. He also emphasized that Malaysia's way of teaching is "outdated" and wished for Malaysians to be more computer-savvy. He said new ways of teaching should be implemented such as utilizing online software to teach students in schools and confirmed that there will only be one ministry in charge of all matters regarding education. 

However upon concerns from certain members of the public that the appointment contradicts with Pakatan's "Buku Harapan" manifesto (Page 38 : Promise 12) which states "“any individuals with the prime minister position cannot hold other ministerial positions, especially the Finance Minister position" Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his latest video posted on the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Facebook Page (Dated 18/5/2018) has mentioned that he would not take up the position as it contradicts with the Buku Harapan unless the people of Malaysia choose to accept him as their Education Minister.
