Distorted history textbooks teach warfare to the next generation.

We urge Shinzo Abe’s administration to stop intervening in history education and to revise distorted textbook narratives!

According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN CRC) Article 29, Section 1 (d), the education of the child shall be directed to the preparation of the child for responsible life in a free society, in the spirit of understanding, peace, tolerance, equality of sexes, and friendship among all peoples, ethnic, national and religious groups and persons of indigenous origin. Japan has also ratified this Convention.


However, Abe’s administration is teaching children and teenagers about war rather than friendship. Tsukamoto kindergartners in Osaka, supported by the Abe’s administration, prepare to dedicate their lives for the Japanese Emperor by memorizing the Imperial Rescript on Education, a symbol of militarism. Abe’s administration is training kindergarteners as militarism subjects who prepare for conflict and war.

Abe’s administration teaches children and teenagers oblivion rather than true understanding. From 2020, all primary school students are obliged to learn that Dokdo, which was invaded in the process of invading the Korean Peninsula, is a Japanese territory and Korea is illegally occupying it. This is based on the textbook standards of the 1st year of Abe’s administration. In middle school textbooks, the description of the ‘Comfort Women’ of the Japanese military disappeared, and even if in high school textbooks describe Comfort Women of the Japanese military, they do not mention that the Comfort Women were forced to be sex slaves. This is the result of the Japanese government’s aggressive exhortation to publishers. The Japanese government defines the pain and anger of the neighboring countries as “self-torturing view of history” and demands students to look at it from Japan’s perspective.

In 2020, Abe’s administration intervenes in history education more extensively through the new standards. Intervention of Abe administration’s biased history curriculum must be stopped immediately and any distortions that have been distorted should be immediately corrected in the following direction.

We request the following three changes.

1. We call for history textbooks to focus on understanding, peace, and friendship rather than glamorizing invasion, war and conquest.

2. We demand that history textbooks provide a balanced view of historical events in the Asia-Pacific region.

3. We request that history textbooks face the lessons of history rather than evade the truth of history.

중학생들의 교과서에서 일본군 위안부 서술은 사라졌고, 고등학교 교과서에서는 일본군위안부를 소개하더라도 강제연행은 없었다고 서술합니다.

일본정부가 적극적으로 출판사에 시정 권고한 결과입니다.
주변국의 아픔과 분노를 이해하는 것은 ‘자학사관’이라 규정하며 철저히 자국의 관점으로 바라볼 것을 학생들에게 요구합니다.

2020년, 아베정부 새로운 검정기준을 통해 더 광범위하게 역사 교육에 개입합니다.
아베정부의 편향된 역사교육 과정에 대한 개입은 즉시 중단되어야하며,
