Why this petition matters

Started by Yvonne Sharples

Twenty years ago, more than one billion monarch butterflies migrated from Canada and the U.S. to spend their winters in alpine forests in central Mexico. By 2014, there were only 35 million monarchs left – a drop of more than 90 per cent – and their future remains in peril.”- The David Suzuki Organization.

Loss of habitat, climate change, use of pesticides - so many factors are contributing to declining numbers of not only monarchs, but many native pollinators and plants.

The residents of Winnipeg don't want to lose monarch butterflies.  By Mayor Bowman signing onto the "Mayors' Monarch Pledge, he will commit to 3 of 25 actions that create monarch habitat, and engage us residents in educational and conservation projects.  Over 300 community leaders in North America are already taking action to help their communities bring monarchs back from the brink.

Let's show Mayor Bowman we're concerned for our fragile world and these beautiful, magnificent and unique creatures who travel from Winnipeg to Mexico in the fall and return to us each spring.
