Why this petition matters

Started by Greg Cryer

It is our understanding that MBM Sand Company, Inc. is working with Skilled International, LLC to operate a sand mine in order to extract multiple types of dirt and sand. The operation is located at the end of Carriage Hills Boulevard and affects both the Carriage Hills and Jacob's Reserve neighborhoods. Through conversations with Skilled International, we understand that they will be selling and transporting dirt and sand for many years to come using up to hundreds of trucks daily, with Carriage Hills Blvd as their only means of egress.

We believe this mining operation increases flooding risk, as MBM Sand Company and Skilled International, LLC are currently operating in the floodway of the west fork of the San Jacinto River. Flooding in our neighborhood would be devastating to our community and property values.

This operation has increased strain on the people of our neighborhoods in multiple other ways.  First, it has significantly increased the risk to our children, friends, and pets who walk, jog, and load onto school buses along the boulevard. Second, the frequency and volume of the dump trucks have created an unbearable noise nuisance, with levels frequently measured at greater than 85 decibels. Third, the dump trucks (which often include 18-wheelers) are already causing significant degradation of our road. And finally, the volume of trucks is adding traffic to our already-congested intersection at FM 1488 and Carriage Hills Blvd.

To get a sense of the situation, on March 9, we experienced an estimated 300 dump trucks traveling on Carriage Hills Blvd. Note that 300 trucks equates to 600 passes in a single day, as the trucks travel both in and out of the sand mine along the boulevard.

In addition to the decrease in quality of life we are already experiencing, we expect to also see a decrease in housing values throughout the neighborhoods due to the sand mining operation.

Our communities do not have to accept this!  Please join with us and sign this petition to plead with our county officials to stop the sand mine, preserve our property, and protect our people!!
