Why this petition matters

Started by Caleb Smith

We the undersigned want the USDA to allow the vaccine for RHDV-2 (Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus 2) on an emergency basis while a US company rises to develop an approved vaccine here.

Rabbit owners are concerned that the virus will spread because it has already affected New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Texas, Mexico, and California.
It is highly contagious and very deadly. It is affecting both wild and domestic rabbits.

Although no RHDV2 vaccine is currently approved for use in the US, it's available in France and Spain. USDA and State Vets in outbreak areas currently grant emergency permits for Veterinarians to import inactivated RHDV2 vaccines, but only if there’s a proven case already in your state.

It’s counter-intuitive to wait until a deadly virus is actively spreading in your area before Vets can START the ordering/importing process. Assuming adequate supply is available to meet demand when needed, it takes several weeks for permit approval, international transportation, and actual vaccine appointments. Add another week delay for rabbits to develop immunity. A deadly delay.  More information www.RHDV2.com

USDA & State Vets need to approve nationally NOW, so together we can prevent the preventable & save our rabbits.
