Why this petition matters

Started by Shakira Martin

It is clear we are living in unprecedented and uncertain times with Covid-19 changing the way we live, work, study and socialise.

During this global pandemic, the government have declared parcel delivery companies and their employees such as Hermes, DPD and Amazon as 'Key Workers'. For hundreds of thousands of people across the country, these services are essential for many different reasons; whether it is ordering food and essentials for your loves ones, your child’s birthday gift, hand sanitiser, or electrical equipment such as tablets and laptops to keep in contact with our parent or grandparents.

Over the last few weeks, there is emerging evidence that Hermes Parcel Delivery have failed to delivery thousands of parcels across the country. These include deliveries not turning up, being stuck in depots for weeks, deliveries arriving damaged, or items deemed signed and delivered but not being received by the customer, resulting in customers losing out on hundreds of pounds which Hermes will not admit liability for.

The recent Channel 4 " Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back" show aired 24th April 2020 and showed evidence of Hermes' failure to deliver customer items to their addresses, logging them as undelivered despite customers being at home (due to COVID-19) and then auctioning those items off and keeping the profits of those auctions.

I, alongside thousands of other customers across the country, have fallen victim to Hermes poor customer service and lack of integrity along with a complete failure to resolve the issues and refund customers back for their stolen and/or lost items.

We do not choose Hermes to deliver our packages, so we cannot simply vote with our feet. Hermes is the delivery company of choice for several large companies including H&M who fail to tell customers on their website that they use Hermes to deliver their packages.

With the current contactless delivery policy, it is clear that Hermes and their drivers are not acting with integrity and are taking advantage of the current situation and are stealing customer deliveries. This is unacceptable and they cannot be allowed to continue with total disregard for customers.

Therefore, this petition is calling for the Government to conduct a full investigation by the relevant and most appropriate Select Committee(s) into the following:

1.      Hermes current policies and procedures being implemented during the lockdown and COVID-19 Pandemic.

2.      Investigating why and how customer’s deliveries are being auctioned

3.      How the company is benefiting from any undelivered, missing or stolen parcels.

We, the public cannot allow Hermes as the second-largest delivery company get away with losing customers items and ultimately making customers lose their money especially during these time when people are being furloughed, losing their jobs and unsure where their next income is going to come from.
