Why this petition matters

Started by Families United 4 Justice

The family of Las Vegas Metropolitan police (LVMPD) homicide victim Joseph Justin along with Families United 4 Justice Las Vegas, a local group of police violence survivors, is demanding the immediate resignation of Captain Nichole Splinter, the immediate termination of former LVMPD officer Timothy Nicothodes' medical retirement, and the immediate return of Joseph Justin's belongings to his family.

On August, 22, 2007, Joseph Justin was identified as a burglary suspect and apprehended by LVMPD officers Splinter and Nicothodes. Within 45 seconds, Justin was gunned down. Witnesses on scene stated they never saw Justin with a firearm in his hand. Splinter, who shot first, claimed that she saw Justin hold a pistol to his temple and then point the gun at her, prompting her to shoot. Nicothodes followed her and fired. Justin was shot in the leg and in the back and died from his wounds.

1st Demand:  Immediate resignation of Captain Nichole Splinter.

Splinter is currently Captain, and the Bureau Commander of the Office of Internal Oversight and Constitutional Policing, which oversees internal investigations of police homicides.  We believe police should not be able to investigate themselves, but since they do, investigations shouldn't be led by someone who has taken someone from the community.

2nd Demand:  Immediate termination of former officer Timothy Nicothodes' medical retirement.

In 2012, Nicothodes, who happens to be married to former LVMPD Chief of Staff, Kathy O'Connor, was convicted of a DUI in Montana, and then in 2015, was charged with domestic violence in Colorado, yet he was able to secure a medical retirement via LVMPD.

As taxpayers we pay for officer's pensions.  In the spirit of fairness and integrity we do not believe we should have to pay for the pensions of officers who commit crimes.

3rd Demand:  Immediate return of Joseph Justin's belongings to his family.

LVMPD has had 13 years to return Justin's belongings to his family, yet all they have received is an identification card.  The family is demanding the immediate return of his belongings so they can have some closure and continue healing.

Please support the Joseph Justin family achieve these demands by signing this petition and sharing with your networks.  Thank you!
