Insieme a quel corpo naufraga anche la nostra umanità

Ogni vita merita rispetto. Ogni essere umano è degno di sepoltura. 

Da oltre due settimane il corpo senza vita di un essere umano è lasciato naufragare nel Mediterraneo. Da oltre due settimane un corpo privo di vita è lasciato in balìa delle onde insieme a quel che resta di un gommone, segno tangibile del suo sogno di raggiungere l’Europa.

Avvistato in un primo momento a 5 miglia dal confine tra la sar libica e la sar maltese, la sua posizione è stata segnalata prontamente, e ripetutamente, alle autorità maltesi e italiane. Nessuno, ad oggi, ha ritenuto opportuno recuperarlo.

Ogni vita merita rispetto. Ogni essere umano è degno di sepoltura e questo dovrebbe valere in terra come in mare. Per questo quel corpo deve essere recuperato.

È giustizia. È la nostra cultura a obbligarci a questa scelta. La stessa cultura che in tanti vedono minacciata da popoli e culture più o meno lontani, rischia di morire se noi italiani, europei, rimaniamo fermi a guardare. Se non agiamo.

È l’Antigone che sfida gli ordini di Creonte per dare degna sepoltura al fratello Polinice a mostrarci la strada. Quel corpo da giorni in mare merita sepoltura e proprio a chi avrebbe il potere e il dovere di farlo ci appelliamo: tra le onde del Mediterraneo centrale non sta naufragando solo il corpo senza vita di un giovane uomo, sta naufragando la nostra umanità. Recuperiamolo.

Along with that body, our humanity is shipwrecked as well

Every life deserves respect. Every human being deserves to be buried. 

For over two weeks, the lifeless body of a human being has been left shipwrecked in the Mediterranean. For more than two weeks, a lifeless body has been left at the mercy of the waves along with what remains of a rubber dinghy; a tangible sign of his dream of reaching Europe.

Initially spotted 5 miles from the border between the Libyan sar zone and the Maltese sar zone, the position of the body was and has been promptly and repeatedly reported to the Maltese and Italian authorities. However no one, to date, has taken any action to recover it.

Every life deserves respect. Every human being deserves to be buried and this should apply on land as well as at sea. This body must be recovered.

It is justice. It is our culture which prompts us towards this necessary choice. The very same culture that many feel is threatened by, more or less, distant peoples and cultures, and risks dying if we Italians - Europeans - stand by and watch this injustice. If we do not take action.

It is Antigone, who challenges the orders of Creon to give worthy burial to his brother Polynices, who shows us the way. That body, now floating for days at sea, deserves to be buried and we are calling on precisely those who have the power and the duty to do so, to bury it. Amongst the waves of the central Mediterranean, not only is the lifeless body of a young man shipwrecked, but our humanity is shipwrecked as well. Let’s recover it.
