Why this petition matters

Started by Amy Murphy

We believe Juneteenth should be celebrated and honored through the creation of a USPS Forever Stamp. Juneteenth holiday observes, commemorates, and celebrates the ending of slavery in the United States.

One of the United States Postal Service’s and the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee’s (CSAC) basic criteria for the commemoration of an event on a stamp is the event’s significant impact on American history, culture or environment.  There are few events in American history that had a greater impact on our history, culture or environment than the end of slavery.

To this day, the recognition of Juneteenth across all aspects of American culture has been sorely lacking. The creation of a USPS forever stamp in conjunction with the recognition of Juneteenth as a national holiday memorializes the significance of Juneteenth to American history.

We ask the USPS and Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee to review and approve the recently submitted Juneteenth stamp proposal to the CSAC through the Stamp Selection Process without delay.

A letter dated July 2, 2020 has been submitted to USPS and Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee. To learn more about the process, please click here.
