Oppose Shane Ross' proposal of new penalty system
Oppose Shane Ross' proposal of new penalty system
Why this petition matters
While (fair) progressive penalty systems are successfully used in other European countries the current proposal with draconian penalties associated with top two tiers are non adhering to EU guidance (https://ec.europa.eu/transport/road_safety/specialist/knowledge/speed_enforcement/in_conclusion_ten_rules_of_speed_enforcement_en
In particular applying blanket 30 km/h threshold without consideration of road class (i.e. urban, motorway) or speed limit (i.e. 30 vs. 120) is neither credible nor appropriate. Proposing prison penalty for exceeding speed by 20 km/h (for 2nd offence) is scandalous.
Also viewing road safety simply in the context of speed is one dimensional and unthoughtful. There are many other factors (drivers education, phone usage while driving, faulty or inadequate lighting, deficient tyres) which are widespread on Irish roads and fighting those should have tangible impact on the road safety.
