Why this petition matters

Started by T.C.O.E.W

We demand:

All employees are retroactively paid for all unpaid time they have used from March until such time as Amazon makes the facilities safe for workers.
PPE and cleaning supplies are to be provided at all times.

Employees who receive a COVID-19 test receive 100% pay and put on paid leave until test results are confirmed, and do notreturn to work until they test negative for COVID-19.

Buildings or locations that have positive cases are to be shut down and professionally sanitized, and shall remain closed for a minimum of 14 days with 100% percent pay for all affected employees.

$2 dollar hourly hazard pay increase or sick time pay will be provided for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company must be transparent and honest about the number of cases in their facilities.

Workers receive unlimited unpaid time network wide for the duration of the pandemic.

All employees who have been terminated during the COVID-19 pandemic for refusing to work or for protesting or related reasons shall be reinstated.

Amazon shall directly pay families of employees who have lost their lives because of COVID-19 $200,000K in addition to life insurance they receive.

Minimum wage shall begin at $30 an hour for all hourly associates.

All employees shall become shareholders upon employment and receive returns from their investments annually.

Free childcare and health care shall be provided by Amazon for every employee.

All full time employees shall receive one-hour lunch breaks.
There shall be no wage cap.

Workers shall receive monthly bonuses for productivity or sweat equity and attendance.

All in the top 1-3% percent wealth bracket shall pay a Federal Wealth Tax. Monies collected will be distributed to employees’ communities and organizations, and distributed to address the global crises of climate catastrophe, homelessness and pandemics, public housing, unemployment, the medical fields, and unions.

Workers shall have the right to unionize and sign employee/employer contracts that are renewed annually so that our demands or met negotiated and upheld by all parties involved. A union is the only means by which workers can have the power we need to make Jeff Bezos listen to our demands and meet them.

Our Rationale:

Jeff Bezos, the richest person in the world, has a net worth of$188 billion. He is trending to be the world’s first trillionaire.Over the past 6 months, Amazon’s profits topped $80 billion. Bezos brings in approximately $4,000 per second. It is his one million employees worldwide who give him these massive profits, yet he pays us, his employees, the minimum wage of$15.50 an hour. This wage is too low to reflect the profit workers provide to Jeff Bezos by our labor.

We Amazon workers have put our health and lives in dangerover the past several months during the COVID-19 pandemic. Untold numbers of us have died and hundreds of us have become infected, and our health is still uncertain. This pandemic is still ongoing, with its duration unknown and unable to be predicted. The dangers we face at work continue to exist, as they have since January 2020. The company ended our Unpaid Time Off (UPT) policy on April 30th, 2020, forcing employees to return to work who may not have accumulated enough time to remain home.

Amazon has suggested that their work force of at least 600,000 employees nationwide apply for personal leaves of absence (PLOA) if they do not want to return to work due to the pandemic, but that is not a viable solution, since Amazon maintains that the department handling PLOA requests are overwhelmed, so the company automatically denies these requests. Workers are thereby forced into a barbaric choice between losing our jobs or putting our health at risk by returning to work. All the while, instead of protecting current workers, Amazon is on record hiring 175,000 to keep their labor demands met to replace those who remained home unpaid since the beginning of the pandemic. The company offered a $2 wage increase with double-time overtime pay, but then rescinded that small raise on June 1st, 2020.

Current wages and benefits, especially in the major cities, are insufficient for us to survive. The $2 increase should not be used just to prod workers to work during the pandemic. We deserve better pay indefinitely for building this company into the trillion dollar juggernaut that it is today.

The Congress of Essential Workers urges all workers to go to www.amazonlaborunion.org to find information about joining  unionization efforts and to connect with one or more of our members directly to get started on that process.
