Why this petition matters

Decolonizing Education in NYS

To undo the systematically racist and oppressive process of the American education system by confronting and challenging the colonizing practices that have influenced education in the past and are still present today. "The CR-S Framework marks our journey forward and begins the evolution towards leveraging difference as an asset."

What is the CR-S Framework?

The Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework helps educators create student-centered learning environments that: affirm racial, linguistic, and cultural identities; prepares students for the rigor of independent study; elevates historically marginalized voices; and empowers students as agents of social change. This framework can help us envision a future in which students experience academic success, grow to be sociopolitically conscious and socioculturally responsive, and understand inequality through a critical lens of access, power, and privilege. The framework is grounded in four principles:

  1. Welcoming and Affirming Environment
  2. High Expectations and Rigorous Instruction
  3. Inclusive Curriculum and Assessment
  4. Ongoing Professional Learning

What is A03648/S02937?

A bill in the NYS Assembly Education Committee which "establishes a culturally responsive education curriculum and standards; requires all school districts, charter schools and private schools to integrate culturally responsive education throughout the education of all students at all grade levels; establishes a pilot program in culturally responsive education; appropriates $25,000,000 therefor."
