Why this petition matters

Started by StopTheB

In February 2021, the military in Myanmar took control of the government and the country. Since then, they have committed numerous atrocities and human rights abuses, detaining and even killing hundreds of people - including children. They have tried to bully the people into silence and prevent reporting of what is happening on the ground. Brave young people in the country are now speaking out.

This is a serious breach of youth rights. Not only is it restricting access to healthcare and education, but by placing the people in a constant state of fear, young people in Myanmar are facing a mental health crisis like never before. They constantly worry for their own safety and that of their family. No one is safe.

We are calling on the international community to speak out and stand with the youth of Myanmar. As the largest organisation representing young people and children across the globe, UNICEF are in a position to make a change. We are calling for UNICEF to stand up and publicly speak out to condemn the military in Myanmar for their flagrant and shocking abuse of youth rights.

UNICEF publicly stands up to bullying and this is another example of serious bullying - this time by a government towards its people. We need to place pressure on the military to realise that this has to stop. Democracy needs to be restored in the country and young people need to feel safe. We need this to stop now.
