Egypt is among the most iconic nations in the world, the land of the Pyramids of Giza, the tombs of ancient pharaohs, and... concentration camps?!?! As defined by Webster, a concentration camp is a place where political prisoners or members of an oppressed minority are held to face death or hard labor. 

Egypt manages to check every box. The punishment for consensual gay sex in Egypt is life imprisonment with hard labor and torturous conditions. That is, of course, the punishment if you are able to escape the police-supported vigilante mobs that viciously execute gay people. Those fortunate enough to have been born in another country face deportation.

The United States, as the leader of the free world, has ample political and economic means to sanction Egypt. For the nation's internment of people based on their sexuality, as well as their execution of hundreds of political prisoners on top of countless other human rights abuses, the United States, under President Biden and Secretary of State Blinken, should utilize these sanctions fully until Egypt joins the twenty-first century and ends this murderous, sadistic oppression of people based on who they love.
