Why this petition matters

Started by Isabel Lopez

Brian Ingram a white millennial in the Twin Cities that has decided to open a Mexican restaurant named “Elotes”. None of the owners, exec culinary team are Mexican, yet still the restaurants itself claims to have “Mexican inspired food”. Cultural Exploitation is when the majority culture, in this case white people, adopts elements of other cultures, inaccurately, without substantive reciprocity, consent from the origin group this is a form of. For years the Latinx community has been thriving in the Twin Cites by opening up restaurants and business. Benefiting the community and the economy with its culture and food. Yet still this community always tends to receive the short end of the stick when it comes to trying to thrive as a human in this society and receiving basic human rights. There has been a out cry from the community for him to change the name but still he has not been cooperative and has gone ahead to open the restaurant using this name.

The problem is not cooking their interpretation of Mexican food, it’s the name of this restaurant that is problematic and unacceptable.

CALL TO ACTION: Demand Brian Ingram do not use the word Elotes for his self gain. #NoMasCulturalAppropriation
