Why this petition matters

Started by Raymond Johnson

Elizabeth Fennema is an Emertia Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her career includes two grand bodies of work: the study of gender in mathematics, which was pivotal in understanding that males and females could achieve equally, given the opportunity, and Cognitively Guided Instruction, the ground-breaking research and professional development program that revolutionized how we teach elementary mathematics.

Either of these career achievements would be worthy of awards on their own. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics collects nominations for their Lifetime Achievement Awards each spring, with recognition of the awardees to take place during the opening session of the Annual Meeting. For some reason, Elizabeth Fennema has never been given this award, but it is not too late to make this happen. Although the official nomination materials can only contain one letter of nomination and five letters of recommendation, by signing this petition you will be counted as a co-signer of the nomination letter. For more information about Elizabeth Fennema and her nomination materials, see https://blog.mathed.net/2021/04/lets-get-elizabeth-fennema-nctm.html.
