Animal testing is a cruel way of life and one that many companies follow, but do you know what really happens and which everyday products that you use could have been affected?

An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is foruced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm. Animal experiments are not the same as taking your companion animal to the vet. Animals used in laboratories are deliberately harmed, not for their own good, and are usually killed at the end of the experiment. Some common experiments are:

• Injecting or force feeding animals with potentially harmful substances
• exposing animals to dangerous radiation
• surgically removing animals’ organs or tissues to deliberately cause damage
• forcing animals to inhale toxic gases
• subjecting animals to frightening situations to create anxiety and depression.

Tests like these are unacceptable as animals deserve the right to live freely just the same as humans. But what can you do to help?

 Animal testing for cosmetic products has already been made offically illegal in the UK, but many cosmetic companies such as Avon, O.P.I., Maybelline and Victoria’s Secret along with many other cosmetic brands, still test their products on animals in different countries. But there are also many brands and companies which are completely animal testing free and vegan, such as e.l.f. Cosmetics, Urban Decay, Tarte, Lush and so many more. You could  or try out being vegetarian or vegan to help keep more animals alive, or even start your own petition just like this one to do everything you can to stop Animal Testing.

However animal testing isn't just about cosmetics; doctors and scientists also use animals to test new drugs and medicine, which is legal in the UK. In fact, it is the legal worldwide requirement to test any new drug on animals before humans. They test on monkeys, dogs, rabbits, rats and mice using tests which are unexplainably disgusting, but does it even help? Research shows that currently 90% of drugs fail in clinical trials on humans.  That's despite extensive animal tests suggesting these said medicines were safe and effective. So was it worth the pain that the vulnerable animals had to suffer? I think we can all see the answer here. But what is the alternative?

Because experiments on animals are cruel, expensive, and generally inapplicable to humans—the world’s most forward-thinking scientists have moved on to develop and use methods for studying diseases and testing products that replace animals and are actually relevant to human health. These alternatives to animal testing include sophisticated tests using human cells and tissues (in vitro methods), advanced computer-modeling techniques (in silico models), and studies with human volunteers. These and other non-animal methods are not hindered by species differences that make applying animal test results to humans difficult or impossible, and they usually take less time and money to complete.
