Why this petition matters

Started by Port Townsend Psychedelic Society

The Port Townsend Psychedelic Society is a grassroots, community run organization working towards the common goal of proposing a resolution to decriminalize entheogenic plants and fungi in Jefferson County.

The City of Port Townsend wishes to declare its desire not to expend City or County resources in any investigation, detention, arrest, or prosecution regarding the alleged possession or use of entheogenic plants or fungi.

Our mission is to provide a platform for community dialogue and organization by expanding access to education regarding the medicinal, therapeutic, and cultural properties of these plant medicines.

We envision a society in which humans are happier and healthier with a stronger relationship to nature, to society, to our communities, and to ourselves.

Purpose Statement:
To decriminalize and de-stigmatize entheogenic plants within our society; re-establish our connection with nature; and improve the well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Entheogens are a class of naturally occurring psychoactive substances that are used in religious, shamanic, and spiritual contexts that produce non-ordinary states of consciousness, psychological, and sometimes physiological changes. These substances have been shown to aid in substance abuse, addiction, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety, depression, end-of-life anxiety, cluster headaches, and various other conditions that plague our community. Our scope of plant medicines include psilocybin mushrooms, mescaline cacti, and ayahuasca. Please see our website for more information and resources: https://www.porttownsendpsychedelicsociety.org/

We believe in Port Townsend’s potential to help forefront this movement, as it builds upon the strengths and character of our community. We believe it emphasizes our community values of connection to the natural world, curiosity, creativity, progressive free-thinking, and alternative living (including education, medicine, therapy, and healing). We hope to fuel the momentum towards the growing political campaigns to decriminalize these plants and fungi. This movement has been led by Decriminalize Denver, an organization that successfully decriminalized psilocybin mushrooms in Denver, Colorado, and has been followed by Oakland, California. Their initiative, organized by Decriminalize Nature, has successfully decriminalized all entheogenic plants and fungi.
