Why this petition matters

Started by Amanda Johnson

We the undersigned parents and guardians of students together with teachers and other community stakeholders of Shirley Avenue Elementary School demand that Citizens of the World Charter School cease all interest in petitioning to co-locate at our campus.

Since 1953 Shirley Avenue Elementary has been a vital part of the community and a safe haven for our students.  We will protect and defend our school for neighborhood students and families!

Co-locating at our school will impact our many programs designed to give our students a fair start in life. Currently we need our classrooms for our students. All of our students need room for our computer lab, exercise, music, dance, science, art, robotics, and itinerant rooms. We are lucky to have mommy and me classes offered to our community for their children under 3 years of age. Our Parent Center is host to Adult ESL Classes, Parenting classes and many meetings throughout the week. Our afterschool programs, YDP and YS, will lose their space to help children with homework club and arts and crafts classes. A co-location would bring traffic and other safety concerns to our school with having half the school as an open campus leaving our students vulnerable for strangers entering the campus. Additionally, we would have to share an already small playground space. The cafeteria, auditorium, bathrooms, library, and parking lots would have to be shared. Above all the education and safety of our students would be compromised.

Additionally, Citizens of the World raises over a million dollars a year in parent donations. Shirley Avenue is a Title 1 high poverty school. This co-location would literally be taking from poor children to give to the rich. It is completely unjust.

Our students will not have resources taken from them so that an elite charter school can move in. By signing this petition we stand behind the mission of Shirley Avenue Elementary School and stand against the co-location of Citizens of the World Charter.
