Why this petition matters

Started by Alandra G

Jason Pero, a 14 year old Ojibwe boy from the Bad River Indian Reservation, located in northern Wisconsin, on Lake Superior, was shot and killed by an officer.

On November 8th of 2017, Jason was home from school due to feeling sick. Around 11 AM, it was reported that there was "a male walking down the street with a knife." And that Jason had made the 911 call giving a description matching his own. When sheriff's deputy, Brock Mrdjenovich, responded to the call, it was within several minutes of arriving on scene when he fired his gun twice, hitting Jason in his heart and shoulder. He had lied still outside his grandparents' home. It was not until approximately 15 minutes later, the officer let EMTs help care for Jason.

Despite eyewitnesses saying Jason only had his cellphone, it was claimed that he had a butcher knife, and that he had "refused to drop the knife and lunged at the officer." The conducted investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Justice seemed more so like finding justification. As a result, Brock Mrdjenovich was only suspended on paid administrative leave.

As Jason's grandfather told reporters, "He's a boy. There's warning shots. There's tasers. There's pepper spray. You don't go right on a 14 year old kid and go for the kill zone." And as many who knew and were close to him, they had said that Jason was a sweet boy who resembled a teddy bear, as he was always smiling and didn't have a mean bone in his body. Does that sound like someone who would intentionally make an authoritative figure feel threatened?

No matter what the intentions were, the murder of Jason Pero was UNJUST and could have been completely avoidable. It should not have been justified in the first place. The people of the Bad River community, especially Jason's family, is seeking and demanding justice. We demand his case be re-opened. We demand change and action, fairness and justice. We demand Brock Mrdjenovich be charged for the unlawful murder of Jason Pero.

I ask all those reading this to PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE THIS PETITION SO WE CAN MAKE THIS HAPPEN.

JUSTICE FOR JASON PERO.
