Harper-Lee's Law: No more child deaths from killer button batteries

Harper-Lee Fanthorpe, 2, died after swallowing a button battery from a remote control. The battery slid easily from its holder, and she was able to ingest it. Harper-Lee died from devastating internal injuries. Her death has rocked her family and community.

Button batteries exist in any number of household items, but also in children's toys, books and birthday cards. If a child can access the battery, it can easily kill them.

In Harper-Lee's memory, we need to see a minimum safety standard set for products containing button batteries. Awareness of the dangers of button batteries needs to be raised among the general public, and we need to ensure more data recording of incidents, so that health professionals can improve their clinical care and make faster diagnoses so more lives can be saved.

Harper-Lee Fanthorpe was a beautiful little girl with her whole life ahead of her. Her death was needless and should not be in vain. We hope you will join us in showing your support for her family and friends, and help save children's lives in the future.
