Why this petition matters

Started by Simon Norris

Because of the Coronavirus lockdown in Scotland, we are limited in the amount and type of exercise we are able to do. And currently we are not able to play golf.

I am aware that the Scottish Government are considering 'small incremental steps initially in terms of easing the measures' as part of their COVID exit policy.
I would like to recommend that we consider allowing people to play golf again, now.

There are well documented health benefits that golf provides participants both physically and mentally.
Golf is played in quiet wide open spaces and is enjoyed by people of all ages.
It is possible to play golf while respecting the 2 metres social distancing guidance, but allowing some element of social contact with playing partners. And most players have only a short journey to their course.

I would suggest the following set of guidelines be drawn up for golf clubs (members clubs and council courses);
- online or phone tee booking systems to be used
- 10 minute intervals between games to minimise people on the first tee
- if Professionals Shop is open, then only one person at a time allowed inside
- players must be at least 2 metres apart from each other at all times
- players must not touch the flagsticks
- clubhouses/bars/changing rooms would remain closed until restrictions are lifted further

Scotland has over 188,000 players and nearly 600 courses, so allowing people to play would benefit many people, without endangering others or the Government's COVID strategy.
