Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) Electoral Reform in Trinidad and Tobago
Why this petition matters
FULL WRITE-UP AND MORE INFORMATION HERE!!!
The current method of hosting national elections in Trinidad and Tobago and the resulting two party system that has risen out of it is no longer adequate to represent the best interests of the citizens of this country. We are directly petitioning the leaders of the current administration and opposition to implement a Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) System with an Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) mechanism.
It has become clear that many of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago have lost faith in the current two party system and have either resigned to voting for the lesser of two evils or abstaining from voting altogether.
Official statistics show that there has only been one viable third party since the 1991 elections. However, many believed this split the supporting vote as the two runners up formed a coalition and completely destroyed the 2007 election winner in the following 2010 elections (Figure 3).
Notwithstanding this, the number of voters abstaining completely is normally close the leading cote to or above that of the winning parties. It has become clear that
We need better representation
We need Ranked Choice Voting!
