Unmatched Doctors COVID-19
Unmatched Doctors COVID-19
Why this petition matters
In a recent report released by the Government Accountability Office in December 2019, it was determined that part of the funds traditionally reserved for training U.S. doctors at accredited hospitals will now be diverted to train non-physician clinicians, i.e. nurse practitioners and physicians assistants, instead. This has been argued as a means of addressing the doctor shortage in our country. However, in light of the recent outbreak of the novel Coronavirus I strongly urge that our lawmakers and policy writers reset and review this issue from a different prospective. There are thousands of unmatched medical graduates, many of which are U.S. citizens working as Uber drivers, and waitresses. Many of them have tried for years to get into a residency program, but to no avail. This issue must be quickly readdressed. We absolutely can not afford to turn our attention away from the possibility of answering the call to rapidly reduce this physician shortage, as there is now more than ever an urgent need to do so. I strongly urge that lawmakers lift the reimbursement cap for Medicare GME funding for residency slots. Many accredited programs have non-funded residency slots available but are not filling them because they would not be able to reimburse their residents. I plea with our lawmakers that we lift the cap and increase funding to these programs. Teaching our next generation of doctors, or medical scientists, is paramount. What we choose to do in this time of national crisis will truly define who we are and furthermore, make a sound statement of what we stand for as a country. We must make a statement that addressing the healthcare needs of our citizens and establishing a sound means of training the physicians who care for them is a priority that is unmatched by any of country. We can do this. We have the means to increase funding. Now let us move forward with it. We have no other choice.
