Sexual harassment refers to an unwanted or unwelcome conduct that is sexual in nature, and may be committed physically, verbally, non-verbally, psychologically and/or visually, which may cause the person being harassed to feel humiliated, offended or threatened.

Sexual harassment is NEVER just a joke. It’s time to take sexual harassment seriously.

Did you know that All Women’s Action Society’s (AWAM) Telenita Hotline received over 38 reports of sexual harassment within the last 5 months alone? These numbers are higher than statistics recorded from the last two years combined. How many more survivors need to speak out before ENOUGH is ENOUGH?

AWAM urges the Malaysian Parliament and the Cabinet of Malaysia to take serious action to end Gender-based Violence and sexual harassment – through the tabling of the long awaited and much needed Sexual Harassment Bill during Parliament sitting in November. A draft Sexual Harassment bill has already been prepared and submitted by a coalition of NGO’s and government agencies and the passing of the Sexual Harassment Bill has bipartisan support.

The Bill would extend the definition of sexual harassment to encompass public spaces and not just work environments, provide more accessibility, protection and privacy for survivors as well as looking at sexual harassment cases from the perspective of victims to better handle their cases. The Bill would work towards making Malaysia a safer space for Malaysians and non-Malaysians alike.

KEY DEMANDS INCLUDE:

- Improving the definition of sexual harassment to encompass public spaces and not just work environments

- Widening coverage so more people are protected from sexual harassment

- Getting public and private sectors to take proactive measures to combat sexual harassment through having and disclosing their own sexual harassment policies

- The existence of a Tribunal to handle sexual harassment cases

- Employees/Employers/individuals within any public or private organization can hold their companies accountable to the Tribunal should they not have SH policies or prevent and redress sexual harassment cases

- Enhancing protection and access to justice

Another day without the protection of the Sexual Harassment Act could mean another survivor of sexual harassment. Help us help YOU by signing the petition. Help us make Malaysia a safe space again.
