Why this petition matters

Started by Lefas Humanitas

Now is the time to do the right thing and for us, Great Britain, to demonstrate our leadership, magnanimity and friendship. We want to show good will towards the people of Greece and reunify the sculptures, which we have looked after all these years.

We, the British people, share a deep respect for the Greek people and their heritage, and want to show them our support by returning the missing half of their precious and unique national treasure, the Parthenon Sculptures, which are currently held in the British Museum.

We support and urge the government and British Museum to:

1. Trust the trustees: Amend the law (British Museum Act of 1963) to enable the Museum trustees to negotiate a win-win solution to this centuries-old dispute by returning the Parthenon Sculptures to Athens in exchange for a host of benefits, exchanges and new exhibitions. We call on the Government to approve this bill.

2. Do the right thing: Once this bill has passed, we call on the British Museum, which has cared for these wonderful sculptures for 200 years, to return them home where they can be reunited with the other parts of this unique sculptural ensemble.

3. After Great Britain takes the lead by returning our half of the missing marbles, we encourage the other countries holding smaller pieces of the Parthenon Sculptures to follow our example and return these as well. This is how we can heal an old wounds, honour old friends and restore integrity to Greece’s most important classical monument and symbol of the Greek people.

When these Sculptures are reunited in Athens again, whole and complete, Britain will have every reason to be proud.

Let’s put the Parthenon Sculptures back together again.
