Why this petition matters

Started by Precious Graham

Hello there,

Two of my children are currently in secondary school. One has and one is currently reading the book 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck during their literacy lessons. The book has the racist word ni***r in it with one page stating it 5 times.

Teachers and children have to read this book not taking into account that it could offend and upset black students in the class.

My daughter was the only black child in the class when this was being read and the teacher nor the children felt it was inappropriate to use this racist word in front of her. Yet it was freely read, which made her feel very uncomfortable and upset. My son is due to read the book.

I was told by his school that they choose not to offend, but see it necessary to continue with this literature as they have done for twenty years or so.

Why is it okay to have black racist words used and read out in class. There are many positive types of literature which sheds light on the past and black people in a positive way. I am asking for this book to be prohibited from being used in school.

Other minority groups are protected from abuse. It's time racism was stamped out full stop. Please help to stop racism in schools by prohibiting this book to be read within the Curriculum.
