Rename Sir John Hawkins Square, Plymouth, Jack Leslie Square
Rename Sir John Hawkins Square, Plymouth, Jack Leslie Square
Why this petition matters
Born to a Jamaican father in Canning Town, Jack Leslie was the only professional black player in England during his time with Plymouth Argyle. He played over 300 games for the club. He was set to become the first non-white player to represent England at international level before he was denied the opportunity when selectors were made aware that he was "a man of colour".
As we rid the city of a place name celebrating a slave trader I feel it would be appropriate to rename the square after a really inspirational man, a trail-blazer, who was denied his chance to make history.

Here you will find details of the campaign to raise funds for a statue of Jack at Home Park where he was a hero. It would be great for the club to embrace Jack's story.
