Families in Washington, D.C. are explicitly calling for new, innovative, and high-quality middle school options for our thousands of middle school-aged students. Through extensive research into school waitlist and performance data, and affirmed by the hundreds of interviews we conducted with families searching for new school options, The Social Justice School's founding team learned that families urgently want and need higher-performing schools where their students can deeply engage in becoming collaborators, communicators, and problem-solvers. The imbalance of academic achievement between specific demographic differences has been normalized, and students need to work and learn together across difference to design the equitable world they would like to inhabit.

We call on the D.C. Public Charter School Board for new and better middle school options to address the mounting education inequity in our changing city. We encourage and demand a school where students:

• Engage in academically rigorous learning expeditions rooted in social justice, with the opportunities and needs of our local communities at the forefront.
• Come together across all forms of difference to tackle the root causes of inequity.
• Engage in a comprehensive, student-centered approach to becoming fearless in the face of injustice, relentless in the pursuit of justice, empathetic to the experiences of others, and engaged with themselves, their learning, and their worlds.

The Social Justice School seeks to open its doors to 150 fifth and sixth graders in Fall 2020. Backed by the premier pioneers in education reform and steered by a prolific team of education leaders, The Social Justice School will catalyze D.C students to become designers of a more just world.
