Why this petition matters

Started by Emma Sanford

Senior management at the University of Roehampton proposes to cut £3.2 million from staffing budgets in the Schools of Arts and Humanities. While the university states that it is in financial trouble as a result of COVID-19, the decision to cut only from these two schools reflects their desire to ‘rebalance’ the university.

The cuts will cripple the arts and humanities at Roehampton. In Humanities, the proposed cuts will result in up to a third of staff being made redundant. There is no way to make cuts this large without closing down whole programmes. This will be detrimental to staff, students, and the wider community.

Current and former students have benefitted immensely from the quality of education they receive at Roehampton. Graduate employability is high and student satisfaction far exceeds that of most other subject areas at Roehampton. A number of these subject areas achieved 100% overall satisfaction scores in recent NSS results. The research conducted by those in the Schools of Arts and Humanities is also internationally well-regarded, but will be impossible to maintain with fewer staff.

Help us fight the cuts. We need to make the case for the value of the arts and humanities, particularly at modern universities, which enrich so many lives. This is a fight that will play out across higher education in coming months, and we must take a stand – now.

As students, staff, alumni and members of the wider community, we call on Vice-Chancellor Jean-Noël Ezingeard to work with us to find another way forward.
