Include asylum seekers in immigration reform bill 2021
Why this petition matters
We are starting this petition in regards to the upcoming immigration reform bill 2021. We request to the U.S Senate and Congress to include asylum seekers in the bill. Most of the asylum seekers, including myself, are waiting for their interviews from many years before asylum officers or immigration judges. Many of the asylum seekers are hardworking individuals who are facing prosecution from their home countries and cannot go back home ever. Separated from their and emotionally, physically and mentally traumatized. They have contributed drastically in the US economy and also worked as essential workers during this current Covid pandemic.
Asylum seekers should be provided green cards at least who cleared the background checks and also who worked as essential workers during this Covid-19 pandemic. Most of the countries, including our neighbor country Canada, across the globe are recognizing the contributions of asylum seekers in this pandemic and giving them legal status.
Also, previous administration has changed the asylum interview system from FIFO to LIFO which is unfair for the people who had applied long time ago. People who gave applied asylum recently are given priority while scheduling the interview and people who applied 3-4 years ago are left behind in limbo. We do request the current administration to bring the system back to FIFO so that it would be fair to everyone.
We request that asylum seekers would be included in the bill and would be treated fairly.
