Why this petition matters

Started by Texas Health and Environment Alliance, Inc.

Clean, safe water should be a basic human right. For all of us.

What has happened to our community members east of Houston is happening all across America. Our water has been contaminated and our kids are sick, and we are not alone -  more than 25 million people live within 10 miles of these sites, according to a review of the U.S. Census data in 2000.

We need your help. Right now, what is happening to us is likely happening in your town too -  the good news is, the cleanup of the San Jacinto River Waste Pits Superfund Site is establishing a foundation and best practice when it comes to remediating historic waste in your state.

We are taking your signature to the EPA to increase the sense of urgency for the waste to be handled safely and in accordance with our laws and regulations. We need the EPA to ensure this waste does not become a problem for another community!

The United States currently has about 1800 “Superfund” sites or documented locations where entities have dumped toxic waste into the environment, often causing ongoing damage to public health.

We are taking this signed petition to the EPA before the end of the year because there is no time to waste!

We are Texas Health and Environment Alliance (THEA).

Over the past five years, we have made so much progress toward a cleanup plan for the San Jacinto River community, but a cancer investigation by the Texas Department of State Health Services showed that children in our community are 16.4x more at risk of getting Retinoblastoma eye cancer.

Here at THEA, we’ve seen the effects of a dioxin-tainted environment on the health of our very own family members. It’s unacceptable, and we refuse to let it continue.  With your help, we will urge the federal government to treat Superfund sites like the emergency that they are.

We know the dangers of dioxin. Science has confirmed its correlation to increased rates of cancer and other illnesses for decades, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is aware of these findings. Since 2010, the EPA has said they consider “dioxin to be highly toxic” and have listed it as a hazardous substance. Yet this potent carcinogen remains in our river.

Sign our petition today, it’s what our children deserve, and what our country needs. We won’t stop until our environment is clean and safe. And we need your support.
