Convert the Texas Mountain Lion from "nuisance" to "game species"
Convert the Texas Mountain Lion from "nuisance" to "game species"
Why this petition matters
Mountain lions are native to Texas and classified as a “nuisance” which provisions that they can be killed without consideration in all seasons.
We seek to convert the Mountain Lion status to “game species” to help ensure healthy population management in Texas.
Making Mountain Lions a game species will:
-Further the conservation goals of hunters
-Increase data on population and migratory patterns
-Ensure healthy populations are sustained and managed
-Protect against orphaned cubs caused by out of season kills
Mountain lions serve a distinct role in Texas ecosystems:
-Managing invasive feral hog populations
-Promoting healthy populations of deer and other game species.
-Managing coyote populations that threaten livestock like goats and chickens
-Patrol 75-125 square miles of territory
Lions are reclusive, shy, and rarely seen by humans. The Trans Pecos region has the largest breeding populations, and a few sightings have been reported across the Hill Country, the South Texas plains, the Balcones Escarpment, and rugged canyonlands in the Panhandle of Texas.
Though the species is categorized of “least concern” it is widely agreed that populations are dwindling and supporting data on population strength is lacking.
Promote healthy stewardship of our Texas species by converting the Mountain Lion from “nuisance” to “game species” designation.
