Why this petition matters

Started by Tobin Strong

For the last couple of years, it has not been much of a problem to go to the Secretary of State office (Michigan's version of the DMV) because you could hold your place in line with a cell phone number.  "Get in line online" is what they called it.

It worked great.  Instead of sitting there at the SOS, you could be working or running errands or whatever until they texted you that you're getting close to the front of the line.  And the last couple of times I used it, the line was over 2 hours long so it was worth doing something else.

Now, in the year 2020, for some reason they removed the one convenience that we had.  Now you must either sit and wait at their office or you must make an appointment in advance.  And the appointment ran 45 minutes late the last time we were there, so it doesn't remove the waiting either.

Why did the SOS remove the best improvement they've made in recent history?  Why don't we have that option anymore?  Based on what we've heard, they changed this across the board for all offices, so this change affects all Michiganders.  How many hours of productivity are lost in Michigan per year because the SOS has regressed?

This petition is for Jocelyn Benson as the Secretary of State to restore the MI-Timeline option to check-in and get line status via text, like we had for the years 2016-2019.
