According to the Dallas Morning News in 2012, one angry post ruined 14 year old Hope’s life. After arguing with her mother, Hope ran to facebook to express the disdain that she felt toward her mother. “I hate my mother” was what she posted and within 45 minutes, 20 year old Shayla Williams had promised to give Hope a sanctuary but instead she drove her to a hotel where William Jacob’s would become Hope’s sex trafficker, selling her across five state borders to approximately 30 different men. It Happens When it comes to human trafficking most people are unaware that there is an issue happening within U.S. borders. Our goal is to implement an educational program that shines light on the domestic minor trafficking issue in the United States. With 293,000 children at risk, we feel it is imperative that children have knowledge on who traffickers are targeting, who the traffickers are, and the methods they use to gain access to victims. We feel that this awareness program should start at a seventh grade level and continue on till high school graduation. The campaign would be held over a week long period every January, to coincide with Anti-Human Trafficking Month. The campaign “It Happens: Anti- Domestic Child Trafficking Awareness” would urge students to wear the color blue as a symbol of anti-human trafficking during the week of awareness and end with an informative assembly. “It Happens” will address what child trafficking is by defining sex trafficking and labor trafficking. Through this campaign we will make the children aware that no minor under the age of 18 years old can be identified as a prostitute, they are a victim no matter the circumstance. The assembly will address the common characteristics of victims which include; age, race, socioeconomic status, abusive homes, and runaways/lack of parental support. The age range and which girls are being exploited is between 12-14 years old, the age of exploited boys is even lower being 11-13 years old. With the technological advances that have been made and the extreme use of social media, traffickers are now able to access a wider range of youth they were unable to access before. Social media workshops will be implemented during awareness week to inform students about the dangers of social media. “It Happens” will also address who the traffickers are; parents, friends, “boyfriends”, “girlfriends”, and strangers. As well as, address the methods traffickers are using to gain access to minors. Parents sell their children to pay for drugs or in situations where they are financially unstable. Children, most commonly girls, are targeted by older boys or men offering them love and a stable environment. Once the trafficker has gained the trust of the child, he flips the script on the child by telling them they owe him for everything he has done for them. Shared Hope International was created with the mission to rescue and restore women and children exploited through sex trafficking and works to prevent the trafficking of new victims. Shared Hope has created conferences for law enforcement and first responders to help identify victims correctly. We feel with what Shared Hope is doing to inform law enforcement and other agencies, that we can also increase knowledge to children on how to protect themselves and better identify victims, whether it be themselves or friends. By bringing awareness to the fact that child trafficking does happen, children could be equipped with the knowledge of how to stay safe. By raising awareness about the targets, our final goal would be to potentially decrease the number of at risk children being trafficked. “It Happens” will give access to children on how to stay safe on social media sites and their everyday lives.
