Voters across the country and residents of John Lewis’ district alike are outraged that the people will not have a say in who will represent them as the democratic nominee in place of John Lewis for his upcoming term. 

The executive committee of the Georgia Democratic Party on Monday, July 20, 2020 decided on a nominee who would take Lewis’ name on the ballot. Per GA law OCGA 21-2-134(b)(1)(B), the state democratic party’s replacement nominee will appear on the November 3 ballot to be the next U.S. congressional member for Georgia’s 5th District for the next two years. 

Residents and other citizens nationwide say the legacy of John Lewis and the democratic ideals he fought for are dishonored by this method of appointment. And, they want to have a say in who represents them.
