I am one of many parents of international students in Vancouver. I came here to offer my child opportunities to learn English, make Canadian friends, and experience the culture and nature of Vancouver even for a short period of time just like many other international parents. Due to sudden COVID-19 outbreak, however, schools have been closed right after the Spring Breaks in March, and the children have been staying at home, some having online classes in much reduced time or some having only a few assignments from their teachers without any classes opening online. Due to our utmost dissatisfaction for such irregular and insufficient online learning, and no clear prospect of the school reopening in September as well as the concerns over our children's safety and financial strains as foreigners here in case of possible infection, many of the parents would like to withdraw and go back to our country while the direct air route is open. However, many Educational Boards in BC are refusing to give our tuition back in a reasonable way. No one could have anticipated such a world wide pandemic, however it does not make sense that the educational boards insist on their original refund policies and try to shift all the financial burdens to our international students. Lower than expected online lecture qualities, lack of direct interactions with teachers and friends, inability to use various school facilities are not what we had originally agreed on & paid our tuition for. We understand that the school boards have been greatly impacted financially by Covid19 but so have we. With tuitions, house rents, and so on, the financial burden is so great on us too. It is not right that they do not offer us proper refunds especially for the fall terms which haven't even started yet. And so I'm demanding on behalf of many parents of international students here that all educational school districts in BC understand our situations and be more reasonable in their refund policies under this pandemic crisis so that we can go back to our country safe and sound and as quickly as possible with good memory of Canada.
