Recent restrictions - level 3 lockdown - imposed by the Government to curb covid contagion include prohibiting beach access and - in the interpretation of most police forces - thus prohibiting watersports: surf, windsurf, kitesurf, foil and the like.
Many countries that have gone through critical covid emergencies have gone through similar extraordinary measures.
In most legislations solo sports - like golf and windsurf - have never seen such limitations imposed. Or if they have, it was only under the stress and pressure of the first few decisions and regulations produced. With later acts the governments have made them legal again.
After more careful consideration it was in fact decided in most countries that solo sports do not create a possibility of congregation and thus pose no real threat in covid terms to the spread of the virus.
Please sign this petition to get the ZA Government reconsider restrictions affecting watersports. Quickly crossing a beach to get to the water and stay in the water for your session does not pose a significant sanitary or health problem.
This is just common sense, no need to address the topic scientifically.
Please Mr Ramaphosa do have your cabinet reconsider the decision affecting watersports and please have the Cabinet double check with international sports federations for these disciplines.
They will guarantee that surfers, kiters, windsurfers, suppers and foilers are no criminals. But some of the most law abiding citizens of the world.
Who would enjoy being able to carry on with their lives and their sports through the pandemic.
