Save the Vaquita
Save the Vaquita
Why this petition matters
The exquisite Vaquita porpoise is on the brink of extinction!! The Vaquita is a small porpoise that is only found in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. It is the most endangered marine mammal in the world. Experts estimate that only between 6 and 22 Vaquita remain in the wild. The swim bladder of an endangered fish called the totoaba is prized in China, but the way the fish is caught by poachers using illegal gillnets (seen above) ends up drowning the nearly extinct Vaquita. This must be prevented!
We call on Mexico President Obrador, U.S. President Trump, and PRC President Xi Jinping to increase international efforts to save the Vaquita by taking the following actions: (1) dramatically increase the pace of removal of illegal gillnets in the Sea of Cortez; (2) increase enforcement efforts against poachers and the illegal trade of totoaba products; (3) allow video of illegal fishing to be used as evidence in court against poachers (currently not allowed); and (4) support Vaquita-safe fisheries to conserve the species.
There is no time to waste. We must act NOW!!
